Lucas County Commissioners Award More Construction Bids & Receive Ballpark Bond Ratings
|
Lucas County Commissioners awarded three more construction bids for the
new Lucas County ballpark in downtown Toledo. The bids total $2.7 million, for the
playing field, miscellaneous metals, and renovation of St. Clair Village.
Lathrop Construction, ballpark construction manager, made recommendations on
the best and lowest bids as follows:
|
Playing Field
|
Athletic Field Services, Oregon, OH
|
$392,262
|
|
Miscellaneous Metals
|
Art Iron, Inc., Toledo, OH
|
$1,079,000
|
|
St. Clair Village
|
A.A. Boos & Sons, Toledo, OH.
|
$1,235,901
|
The St. Clair Village buildings are adjacent to the ballpark, and will include the
Toledo Mud Hens offices and souvenir shop, Stadium Club overlooking the ballpark
available for rental, and other office space to be leased.
"This latest round of bids shows a commitment from solid companies with local
ties interested in helping improve their hometown," said Sandy Isenberg, President of the
Lucas County Board of Commissioners. "We as commissioners promised the ballpark
would help the local economy. Awarding bids to local contractors helps the Northwest
Ohio economy even sooner."
Lucas County Commissioners also learned the bond ratings that were awarded to
the ballpark construction project. The Lucas County Ballpark Bond Team went to New
York City earlier this month to pitch the project to three agencies. Their ratings for the
$19 million in taxable Economic Development Revenue Bonds are as follows:
|
Moody's
|
A2
|
|
Fitch
|
A+
|
|
Standard & Poor's
|
A
|
"The 'A' ratings we received from all three bond rating agencies reflect the strong
financial shape the county has achieved," said Commissioner Bill Copeland. "Combine
the strong bond rating with the current favorable bond market and we could save as much
as one million dollars in interest." --more--
Lucas County Commissioners expect to issue the bonds sometime in March.
Construction bids will be awarded for masonry work, stadium seating and general trades
in the next few weeks.
"We are on the cusp of seeing tangible results from all of our ballpark efforts so
far," said Commissioner Harry Barlos. "Once the second and third group of contractors
get to the site, passersby will have a street-level window to a wonderful work in
progress."
Lucas County Commissioners, Toledo Mud Hens, and the Arts Commission of
Greater Toledo will announce Friday an effort to ask local artists to contribute their
talents to enhance the look of the new ballpark.
Excavation and concrete work have already begun on the ballpark site, bordered
by Huron, St. Clair, Washington and Monroe Streets. Steel structural work will begin in
the next few weeks. Passersby will begin to see the ballpark's steel skeleton take shape in
the downtown Toledo skyline by late spring or early summer. The ballpark is scheduled
to open in April, 2002.
