Lucas County Designated StormReady
Lucas County Designated StormReady
On May 13, 2008, representatives from the National Weather Service were on hand at the Lucas County Board of Commissioners weekly meeting to award Lucas County the designation of StormReady. This announcement makes Lucas County the largest county in the state of Ohio to be designated StormReady. Designation as StormReady by the National Weather Service recognizes a community's proactive approach to improving hazardous weather operations. Lucas County's severe weather capabilities and accomplishments include a 24-hour severe weather warning point and emergency operations center, multiple means to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and alert the public of such, the ability to monitor weather conditions locally, community seminars on the importance of public readiness, and a formal exercised hazardous weather plan incorporating trained severe weather spotters.

Designation as a StormReady community also has the potential to reduce county citizens' flood insurance rates. The StormReady designation is one of multiple criteria that increases our community's class in the Community Rating System. The Community Rating System is a voluntary incentive program within the National Flood Insurance Program that allows a community to reduce citizens' flood insurance rates by up to 45%.
