Incidents vs. Referrals
2007 Referrals: 4,426
2007 Incidents: 4,543
LCCS reports both “referrals” and “incidents.” While the two are related, they
refer to different things and are reported as separate statistics. This
provides a more accurate and detailed picture of the agency’s activity in
regard to abuse and neglect investigations. A report to LCCS alleging abuse or
neglect is a “referral,” but there may be more than one “incident” attached to
a single “referral.”
For example, LCCS receives a report of child abuse and neglect. While
investigating this “referral,” we receive another report involving the same
family. This is a separate “incident.” Both the initial referral and the second
report are logged as separate “incidents” to be investigated, but grouped as
one “referral.”
