Wetlands Inventory
A recent project completed by several local partners has resulted in an updated wetlands classification and inventory map for Lucas County. Funded by support from the Ohio EPA, the Oak Openings Conservancy, City of Toledo, and Lucas County the work was undertaken by the Maumee Remedial Action Plan Open Space and Wetlands Action Group (www.maumeerap.org), TMACOG, Lucas County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the University of Toledo Department of Geography Geographic Information Science and Applied Geography (GISAG) Research Center (http://www.gis.utoledo.edu).
Geographic Information System (GIS) methods and software were utilized along with analysis and interpretation of satellite imagery produced by Landsat 7 and made available by OhioView (www.ohioview.org) in order to produce the wetlands map for Lucas County. Four wetlands types were identified and classified as being located within Lucas County. These include coastal, wet forest, wet prairie and stream (riparian) wetlands.
Wetlands provide for important natural processes and features including drainage, sedimentation, water filtration, species habitat, and recreational values. The wetland inventory and map for Lucas County will provide community agencies and organizations, planning authorities and citizens updated information on the types of wetlands and their locations and assist with education, regulation and ongoing research efforts.
