The Office Of The Lucas County Prosecutor Past And Future
The Office Of The Lucas County Prosecutor Past And Future
The office of the Lucas County Prosecutor is the oldest law firm in continuous operation in the history of Lucas County. In 1835, Governor Robert Lucas ordered the establishment of the Court of Common Pleas for his namesake, the newly formed County of Lucas, and the appointment of a Prosecutor who would be the chief lawyer for the County. Our first prosecutor, Andrew “Count” Coffinberry, so named for his aristocratic demeanor, was a prominent citizen and one of a handful of attorneys who practiced law in pioneer Lucas County. He served a six-month term until the judges arranged for an election to be held for the purpose of selecting a new prosecutor. Since then, all prosecutors have been elected by the citizens of Lucas County.

The Lucas County Prosecutor is responsible for prosecuting all felony cases brought in Lucas County. The office also serves as the statutory attorney on civil matters for Lucas County officials, agencies and for the eleven boards of township trustees in Lucas County.

During the course of the past one hundred sixty-four (164) years, Lucas County has been served by thirty-five (35) prosecutors. From “Count” Coffinberry in 1835 to the present Prosecutor, Julia Reinberger Bates, all have been prominent citizens and attorneys in the community.
