Anita Louise Lopez was born on August 7, 1969, in Toledo, Ohio. The youngest of seven children, Anita’s parents, Lee and Minerva, taught her to value hard work and dedication. Growing up in the South end of Toledo, Anita attended Newbury Elementary and St. James Middle school. She later graduated from Central Catholic High School.
Anita attended the University of Toledo where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and later her Juris Doctor from the College of Law. While in college and law school, Anita emerged as a student leader serving as the President of MeCha, the Hispanic Law Students’ Association, and an active participant in Student Government.
After law school, Anita began her employment with the Lucas County Children’s Services Board. She then went on to become the General Counsel for the Toledo Fair Housing Center. During this time she was elected to the Toledo Public School Board. Later, she was appointed by Mayor Jack Ford to serve as the Director of Purchasing, Contract Compliance and Affirmative Action for the City of Toledo.
In 2004, while working for the City Law Department, she ran for Lucas County Recorder and beat her opponent by over 43,000 votes. As the Lucas County Recorder she was a member of the Ohio Recorders’ Association, for which she served as secretary and Co-Chair of the Summer Conference in 2006.
Anita has passionately pursued public service throughout her career. Her community service includes being a board member for Connecting Point, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo, and Junior Achievement of Northwestern Ohio. She is also currently an Honorary Co-Chair for the Toledo Zoo Levy Committee.
Her dedication to the Lucas County Democratic Party has enhanced her ability to better serve the people of Lucas County and the City of Toledo. She has served as the President of the Latina Democratic Caucus, a member of the Lucas County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee, and a member of the Hispanic/Latino Democratic Caucus. In each of her campaigns for office she has been honored to be the Endorsed Democratic Candidate. In 2006, she ran as the Endorsed Democratic Candidate for Lucas County Auditor.
She was elected to the position of Lucas County Auditor in November of 2006, defeating 13 year Republican incumbent Larry Kaczala, and currently serves the citizens of Lucas County in this position.
Anita lives with her husband, Ray Arce, and their two sons, Armand and Andres in Maumee, Ohio.
