A Letter From Dr. Grossman, Health Commissioner
A Letter From Dr. Grossman, Health Commissioner
Thanks for entering the Home Page of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. Our goal is the promotion of health and the prevention of disease and assurance of a healthy environment.

As we move into the fall and winter seasons, our lives become filled with school activities, local festivals and holiday gatherings. Many of these events will include preparing and sharing food, participating in outdoor activities, and staying warm by a fireplace. In order to prevent illness and injuries, we encourage you to continue proper food safety, as well as become familiar with recreational and home fire safety. Our staff is committed to these efforts and more specific information is provided in the below links.

Unfortunately, the fall and winter seasons can create conditions for illnesses such as colds and flu. Flu shot information is provided under the link titled “News From The Health Department”. We are also actively coordinating with our local health care facilities on SARS surveillance. For many contagious illnesses, proper hand-washing is the most important means for keeping you and your family healthy.

Now is also the time to prepare for severe winter weather. Guidance on winter weather preparedness is provided under the link titled “Emergency/Disaster Preparedness.” Disaster preparedness, both for manmade and natural disasters, is beginning to be an essential fact of life. We have over 4 full-time employees working on these concerns on a daily basis. Some of their work and recommendations are linked below.

Not only is our staff involved in seasonal and evolving topics, but also we have a core group of functions that are continually ongoing. There are too many such items to list, but a few items include Pediatric Dental, Childhood Immunizations, Adult Medical, Vital Statistics and much more.

Staff here at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department are very dedicated and work hard to provide the most effective and efficient services possible. We are here to serve the public. We are happy to hear from you with questions, concerns and comments.

Yours in Public Health,

David Grossman, M.D.
Health Commissioner
