The Lucas
County Solid Waste Management District provides residential and industrial
waste tire recovery and recycling programs to assist with safe and sanitary
disposal of unusable tires.
Since 1998 the District has collected more than 200,000 scrap tires from the
residential sector through available programs.
Most auto shops will also accept tires for a fee.
The District also works with local communities and private industries with abatement of scrap tires.
The District is instrumental providing for scrap tire remediation and beneficial use for illegal or
ill-managed tire sites and stockpiles.
Through this effort, the District has removed over 350,000 tires from the community, which could have
caused millions of dollars of damage to homes, business and the environment.
The District has also been the recipient of application grants from the Ohio Department of Development
(ODOD) for projects utilizing scrap tires.
In October 1997, Lucas County completed construction of a five-acre parking lot at the Lucas County
Recreation Center. In the process over 262,000 pounds of recycled crumb rubber was used in the parking
lot construction.
Remember...Ohio law prohibits disposal of whole tires in landfills.
